hey guys i need to prove a mate wrong by turning my uno in to a track car and it has to be quick. does any know if you can fit any 2ltr lump in it or 1.8 from a alfa or sometimg like that. also it needs to be simple to fit as well

Any engine will fit if you've got the time, facilities and money. It all depends on the size of your budget.

As for a direct swap there's only really one option and that is to fit the Uno turbo engine. 105 - 120 bhp as standard, up to 150bhp is easily achievable, and with a lot more work (and money) 200bhp is possible. Power to weight ratio of a Uno is already good so the performance gains will be very apparent.

Fitting bigger engines will have a drawback of extra weight. If you want your Uno to be a competitive track car the last thing you want to do is add weight to the front and ruin the handling. Plus you'll end up having to have custom made engine mounts/ driveshafts/ exhaust systems etc.

If you start off with a Lampredi engined Uno (1116cc and 1299/ 1301cc mk1, 1372cc mk2) you can drop in the 1.5 X1-9/ Delta/ Regatta engine or the 1.6 Tipo/ Tempra engine. If you have a FIRE engined Uno then you're best looking at the 1242 8v SPI/ MPI or 16v Sporting engines. If you can afford it, one of the new 1.4 16v Super Fire engines will go in too.

The advantage of the FIRE engines is that they are light, so though they don't have monster power outputs the power to weight ratio is improved. And as mentioned above this has positive effects on the handling (y)

Good luck!

mmmm if only i had the money, skills and facilities to do a conversion. If i could afford a new UT lump and the insurance on it would probably do it with my dad :)
your lucky to want to try and get a 200bhp uno :(

I've got a 1.6ltr Tipo motor in mine. Its very good, I beat an Uno Turbo to the first corner at the new Taupo track... The pull off the line is very good, the power is constant and predictable (unlike a turbo which suddenly arrives in an amusing, exciting, scary kind of way), the pull out of corners is nice, and the general feel is good too. The weight increase is next to nothing over any of the other 128 type motors.

The engine swap was pretty easy, you just need all the mounting, and exhaust stuff from an Uno which has a 128 type motor (1116cc or 1301cc - or even a turbo). You also need the gearbox and flywheel off this more. There are lots of other little bits you probably want to swap over, so its best to find a dead 128 motored Uno. The donor Unos to look out for are: mk1 Uno 60, mk1 Uno 70S/SL, mk2 Uno 75SXie, Uno turbo. The Tipo is the DGT.

The bits we took from the Uno 70 are:
  • Gearbox and linkages
  • Flywheel and clutch
  • Distributor
  • Timing pulleys and auxiliary shaft
  • Head
  • Carb and air box (but we changed the carb)
  • Fuel pump
  • Starter motor and Alternator
  • A few other small bits and pieces

Mine now has a carb from a 105TC which is a recommended upgrade.

Ahhh the benifits of NA over Turbo on track!.....Damm that lag! lol

estion, the problem with Putting in an engine like a Alfa Romeo 2.0 Twin-Cam is the extra weight over the front wheels!

Yes more weight WILL equal MORE traction because of more weight on the same "Footprint" but the weight has be taken care of by the suspension!
I noticed this in a street race in my area, a "claimed" 280bhp 2.0 Vauxhall Corsa was very very quick!, but watching it brake from some speeds it produced made me wonder, the front would "Bob" up and down like a bitch! lol

You can put one area of the car "up" but you got to keep in mind that the other areas of the car WILL be affected, the word balance springs to mind! lol

jjhepburn has taken a good route by going the 1600 Tipo route

A) The engine is a direct bolt-in
B) The engine can ustilise other Fiat parts! (Such as ignition and fuel systems)

Personally, being a Uno Turbo owner, BOOST ALL THE WAY! lol
But then i am completly biased! lol

I think you'd enjoy a small Revv-happy 1301cc motor on track and it might surprise you mates a little...............but if that not enough, you do have the option of 2.0 16/8 Valve Turbo Lancia Delta Integrale engine!

Ive even seen a 2.2 16valve Lancia Turbo engine in an Uno!
