Just wondered if anyone else out there has come across the fact that the towing capacity for the Ulysse 2.0JTD is around 500kg less than for the equivelent Citroen C8 / Peugeot 807 variants. This became an issue for me this weekend whilst i was trying to purchase a caravan. The dealer wouldn't let me take the desired unit as it weighed in at just under 1700kg (Fine if you have a Citroen or a peugeot - but not with the Fiat, as 1345 is the max towing limit.) I have made several enquiries about this matter, and seem to have got the most sense out of a very nice sales man (contradiction i realise) from Barrons Caravans at Coppull. He told me that he had a customer at the back end of last year with the same problem. It turns out that because the Fiat is from an Italian manufacturer, they test the vehicle to their own countries legislation, which apparently is far tougher than the rest of Europe. But apparently this Gent in question contacted Fiat who issued him with the relevent paperwork to say that he too, in his Ulysse could tow upto 1850 kg, as per the Citroen/Peugeot twins. Has anyone else out there come across this? And does it then validate your insurance, as i really don't fancy being caught out if anything - God Forbid - should happen.

Any comments would be gratefully received!!

Cheers

I had the same dilema as I tow a 1600kg van, I saw all the other models can tow more. I chatted to someone who sometimes goes as an expert witness to Police check points and he said the towing capacity of a car is checked via the details on the VIN.

See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/vin.htm for details on how to read one. Check yours out and see.

Paul (PS don't blame me if the day you get stopped they use your book!!)

PPS when did caravan dealer become the law on what you can and can't buy?

Hi Paul.

Apparently Caravan Dealerships have to show a "Duty of Care" to ensure that the van they sell you is safe to be towed by your vehicle. One Dealership told me it was happy to sell me the van i wanted but they would have to deliver it to my home so that they don't have to get involved with the car issue. They were politely told to go forth!!!!
I have, since posting this thread, received a detailed letter from Fiat UK stating that i am legally allowed to tow a caravan upto 1850 kg, as long as i don't exceed the 3850kg Train weight of the car. I wanted to get this clarified before committing to the van, as its much harder argueing the toss after the event. (God Forbid that anything should happen, but you can't be too carefull where insurance companies are concerned.) If you require a copy of said letter i could send you the contact details for the kind Gent at Fiat uk. Cheers for your responce and happy carravaning!!!

Alex.

Interesting, any chance you can scan the letter and put it for D/L ing?

or tell me who you got it from please?

Paul

The Gent that i contacted at Fiat UK is Mr T (Tim i think) Speechley. He is the Homologation Executive for Fiat UK his direct dial telephone number is01753 519526. Just tell him that you spoke with me about towing capacities and he'll send you a personalised letter within a day or two. Very efficient!!

Hope this helps
