Good morning everyone, In my ongoing attempts to sort out my never ending list of jobs on my 53 reg ulysse prestigio, I have a comms 2000 unit on its way, could somebody please tell me the procedure for removing the steering wheel airbag? Thank you, regards, Brian.

Hi, I've had to do this myself a few times.

What I do first is to remove the plastic around the steering wheel, think there are 3 torx (star) screws size 15 or 20. 2 at the bottom near the front, and 1 on the bottom near the back.

Look underneath you should see them.

Then at the back of the steering wheel, there are two clips that need to be released, I use 2 fairly substantial flat head screwdrivers, and prise 1 so far, and then prise the other until both clips are released, the airbag unit should then pop up.

Be careful when removing it as it is connected by 2 or 3 connectors, once these are released, the module can be removed. But be careful not to drop the module, it might go off.

The steering wheel is straight forward, think its a 50 or 55 star bit. Just remember to line the wheel to the mark when Refitting or wheel won't be straight when going straight.

There are 4/5 connections to remove from the comm unit, you need to undo a retaining collar for the unit to come off.
When refitting, the connectors are colour coded, grey brown blue, just remember to put them in the right connections.

Also when comm unit is fitted, but before steering wheel etc, remember to push a black collar through the comm unit until it clicks, or when the steering wheel is refitted, and you turn the wheel, you will snap the wires to the horn/airbag and the unit will be knackered.

I know this because I've done it after replacing my comm unit, I now need a 3rd unit which is £300+ new. And I have a unusual part number.

Hope this can be of help to you, it doesn't take too long, just be very careful with connectors etc.

What was wrong with your original unit?? My original one kept switching headlights on and off when ever it liked. And I don't have auto lights etc.

Any more help let me know

Many thanks for your quick reply,It doesn't sound too bad of a job to do,my switch related faults are that as soon as I unlock the vehicle the lights come on and stay on as long as the engine is running,(once I lock the car the lights will go out after 2 minutes) main beam doesn't work, the horn doesn't work, sereenwashers inoperative even though a new washer pump was fitted 3 months ago and had been working, front fogs inop. The rear lights will only work when I operate the switch but still no main beam.

No I haven't been able to find one anywhere, thank you for your offer, it is much appreciated.

Thank you for the manual,I'll download it tonight. After following your excellent instructions,we removed the airbag successfully and fitted the replacement comms 2000 unit. we reassembled it all and everything is still faulty. With the fusebox being placed beneath the windscreen drain(so sensible)my son and I removed the fusebox completely and dosed it liberally with switch cleaner and then blew it dry. All the fuses were removed and checked(including the ones inside the car)everything was cleaned and refitted, but the problem still remains. Now we are stumped, can anyone shed any light on the next step please?

Re: drivers airbag removal/UPDATE

Airbag removed, comms 2000 fitted ,problem still exists, Took car for a diagnostic check which threw up hundreds of faults, the mechanic cleared all the codes, which left one fault. Permanent fault between ecu and bsi, this is on top of a recently Autobox problem whereby the box tries to set off in third(moving over to triptronic doesn't have any effect) As we are getting closer to November and my mot time, this car may soon be appearing on a bonfire near you.:bang:

Hiya sands030905 I’ve just had a look at removing the drivers airbag. Upon inspection there’s a lead with a blue plug which is not connected to anything it’s taped up & tucked behind the clips any idea if this should be connected & what it’s for???
