hi all,can I engage rear drive on my sisley with the rear shafts and wheel bearings removed, reason being I am trying to locate a grinding sound,(bearings /diff) and I am having trouble in regards to its exact location. Not sure if its ok to do this as unsure how diff internals will react with the shafts out,ie internal gears, bearings etc,oh and yes, its well shored up so no chance of any runaway panda scene as have been there done that!Any help is most appreciated.

that sounds good to me V,just wasn,t sure but on the same vein, should there be some oil in the outer shaft housings as i topped up diff and there is no sign of any oil when i removed both rear bearings and shafts?could there be a blockage or perhaps something else?.also any info on diff- overhaul/pics and advice on diff bearings and inner gear removal would be great as cant seem to find any on the forum.many thanks in advance,Capisci

I'm not surprised you can't find anything on here about it, it's not a part people have a problem with. I do know that the diff is removed as a unit with further dis-assembly being carried out on the bench. The workshop manual shows that the axle casing needs to be stretched with a special tool in order to get the diff unit out, I'm not sure if it's possible without it.

I'm out and about this afternoon but will look into it in greater detail this evening and post my findings, unless anyone else has answers?

Looking at the manual it would seem that you should have had oil in the halfshaft tubes, there is an oil seal at the hub end to stop it getting any further. If you do have a problem with the diff bearings you would probably be better off finding a better complete axle. The procedures for replacing them involve a lot of setting up requiring special tools.

oh dear, its back to the drawing board for me,will make a few enquires locally with regards to a rebuild, but I dont hold much hope as when I start to tell them what car the axle is from there eyes glaze over and they start to jibber uncontrollably and drift of into the darkness of their workshop never to be seen again!Just a thought, would santa have any of these in his sack?thanks again V, capisci

Haha, yeah that sounds about right.

It might be worth googling Steyr Puch specialists, they won't be scared, not sure such things exist though.
