Hey guys, just a few questions about the Xbox, can it be hacked so you can play movies(avi, mpg etc)/audio on it? And can you put a bigger than standard hard drive in it? And can you store games on it if it's hacked? Does it support USB connection? Is there anyway you could get some satnav software running on it? Anything else interesting I could do with one? Bit of a long shot! But cheers for any info :)

chap...

www.xbox-scene.com

thats where I got all my info ;)

I run a Crystal Case with blue led's inside the case and inside the controller ports...
Run with an Executer2.2 chip/Bios with customised dashboard with a pic of my car as the background ;)
Then I have software on there called "xbox media centre" this plays all the vids etc u need.

Any other questions, look on the forum or ask :)

If you decide to mod the Xbox I would recommend one of these:

http://www.baldbouncer.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=111&osCsid=1e9201ba7ced86ddbf1ae59c8f33daa9

It's what I have in mine and the same place I brought it from, it may be a little more expensive than others but also has a lot more features and support.
Lets you do loads of stuff as listed in the link, quick and easy to install (don't bother with the solderless option; I've heard it comes loose).
Pretty sure you can FTP films over to it once you have a different dashboard on it, as well as save games to the hard drive.
The hard drive can be upgraded, but there is a limit to the amount, pretty sure it's around 160GB.
People have put USB connections on them however I don't know what function they have.
It's very unlikely you will get a GPS system running on it. Seem to remember someone on the modding forum mentioned they were going to try and got slated for it.
Hope this helps.

Cheers for the info! I'll check those forums out, I aint got me and Xbox yet, I'm gunna hopefully get me a cheap one just after Christmas as the price should be very low due to the 360 :D And I'm going for the Xbox over the PS2 as is seems like you can do much more on them?

speak to pual r he had one. i wouldnt put an xbox in the car. cos its tray loaded. if u hit a bump i think it will skip. a slim ps2 is like a portable cd player u have to clip the cd in.

Good point, Smee. But the majority of game playing will be when I'm not moving in the car, the rest will be movies/audio from hard drive when on the move. And if I hack it then the games may also be coming from the hard drive? I'm not really clued up on how it works yet. You have a PC in your car, yeah? How did you come about this problem with your PC?

Cheers.

yes it is, on the odd occassion that he's watching a dvd he's usually parked up.

plus his PC install, the dvd drive isnt even in the case and just loose behind the seat.

as dan said BUT the hard drives have to hang not sit flat like they do in a tower. and thats how its mounted in the xbox case.

a hard drive is basically a disc with a needle. u could cause major damage.

also xbox hard drive is 8 gig hardly big enough for anything useful so u will have to put a bigger hard drive in. this then will give u the chance to run Linux if u desired.

u will also have to solder the chip as the solderless adapter the DO wire will keep fallin out.

that said if the xbox will run vertically u could fibreglass it to the passenger side airbag area. remove the xbox logo neon light it and have it so the tray opens straight up.

or if u really want to be cool. and this is wat i was thinking of doing. stripping the xbox. like my pc putting it all over my car. so the cd tray where my cd player is. the logo neon lite else where. the motherboard etc can be hidden....

the d0 wire has never come off mine chap, not even when I've dropped it.

its more the solderless adaptor lifting off when you tighten it to the motherboard that screws it up.

easyily fixed tho.

Stripping the Xbox and placing it around the car sounds pretty funky, might give it a go over summer when I'll have a bit more time/money. Would need to do lots of research first as I'm not that clued up on it. Is it a case of adding lots of new wiring? My other choice is a PC install, but was thinking a hacked Xbox could do a lot of the stuff and for a lot cheaper.

you would need new IDE Cables for the HDD and Disk drive and power leads for the disk drive, they are special ones that only the Xbox uses though so be prepared to search (i'm on about the yellow cable) the hdd uses the normal 4 pin connector that a pc hdd uses.

Can't see it being a problem tho :)

A friend of mine has stripped down the xbox and from what I understand it was alot of hassle to locate the CD drive where the HU is. It does look cool though. The rest is in a custom fiberglass install in the glove box.

You can also do a 'softmod' that runs the Evo-X dashboard without needing to chip it!

You need to basically run a hacked version of a splinter Cell savegame.

All the info here:

Or if you only want to enable 720P or 1080i modes for HD screens, without actually modding it: (what I'm doing)

I've only found this out recently, as I'm trying to enable the Hi-Def modes on my unmodded XBox without chipping, so I can still play online. (Havent actually done it yet, I'm struggling with getting my hacked savegame onto the memory unit atm with hacked Action Replay software)
