Hi all,

We recently bought the van with 144K miles on the clock, and no service history, so not sure what state the engine is in at the moment.

We took it on our first long distance drive and I found that when the engine is at running temperature and I am either feathering the accelerator going down a hill, or pulling away at a junction after a momentary pause, there is no power at all, the accelerator seems to by totally unresponsive. A couple of seconts later, all is fine again. I paid more attention to the revs when pulling up at junctions more recently, and the idle seems to drop off to about 500 rpm, and the engine is really lumpy. While the revs are this low, the trottle does nothing. A couple of seconds later, the engine bursts into life again, and the trottle responds again.

Could this be a sticking EGR?

It is booked into Fiat to have a recurring brake shoe issue sorted, but if I could sort the lack of power issue it will be a cheaper bill :)

Cheers

It could be EGR but it could be lots of other things, You should get the codes read and post them on here. I think others have had similar issues with the 2.2

From what you say I doubt if its the EGR, but since you can block it off with a £5 plate off ebay I would think its worth a try. (I could fit a ready made one off ebay in about 5 minutes because I have fitted one before)
I have heard of similar problems caused by throttle pedal electronics, but my knowlege of throttle pedals hasn't progressed much since the days of mechanical linkages.

It could, but my bets are on a sticking throttle valve.
Even if the code logged by the ECU points to EGR I still think the real cause is the throttle valve. The spring that should pull it open is in a narrow chamber with a lot of rust and the valve itself has to cope with soot.

Well, I got it back from Fiat. They reckoned it was the egr and replaced it. Since then the van has been fine when at running temperature. It has now developed a disliking for cold starts. This morning was the first cool morning I have tried to start the van on, and it stared first time, sat happy for a while, then the revs started hunting and it eventually cut out. After a few goes I managed to keep it going while holding the revs at about 2K, but I could feel it spluttering... Once warm, its fine. Ill have a hunt around other posts, it seems a few people have something similar...
