I have an interview tomorrow with a big fire and security company in Aberdeen for a position as a sales consultant.

I am just wondering, has anyone here worked in sales and have any advice? It is advertised as "basic salary + OTE" what is classed as basic salary? I know the more I sell the more I will earn but surely it should still be enough to live on?

On their site I found this on the jobs page too "Sales Agent - Status: Self-employed. Location: Throughout the UK"

Being self employed, does this not mean I would have to register with HMRC and fill out shed loads of forms every 6 months or so?

Any advice is much appreciated :)

Basic salary is most likely that - minimum wage.

Your OTE is your commission - this'll be the bit that puts the Diesel in the Alfa, so to speak.

The self employed part, you'd have to do a yearly Self Assessment. I've not long since done mine, and it's not as bad as you'd think! Just depends what the job entails really - the more out n about/expenses you can gather, the better it'll be! If you keep your books up to date then its minimal hassle!

Well if I get the job I will only need the Alfa for a 3 month probatoin period then I would get a company car (providing they keep me on ofc)

Sounds like its not bad, it says Average 25-30k - Good 30-40k - Experienced 50k+

Just have to work on selling the products lol
