Wiring an amp in, advice...

Hi,

I am going to be wiring in an amp very soon and for the power the booklet advises me to connect it directly to the battery in the car. However, I need to make a small hole in the firewall to be able to connect a wire from the battery into the car.

Can't i just connect this power wire from the amp to the power wire used to power my cars head unit? I know i would have to split it in a 'Y' shape but thats no problem. Do you rekon it would work?

Thanks

John

If you connect the amp to the head unit supply you will most likely blow the fuse. Even if it doesn't, the current drain on the small wire will cause the supply voltage to the amp to drop and make the amp sound dire or cut out.

There is an easy hole to use behind the carpet on the passenger side of the car (assuming its a UK car). There is a great big rubber grommet which you carefully punch a hole in with a screwdriver or the such and thread your wire through that. Remember, you MUST fuse the wire at the battery. I watched a friends car burn as he had not fused his amp supply at the battery and the cable eventually wore through. (he also didn't bother to use a rubber gromet where it went through a metal panel!)

Its probably quicker to wire it to the battery than mess about wiring it to the head unit.

Enjoy!

Got to agree, you definately need to wire it STRAIGHT to the battery, with its own fuse no more than 18" from the live on the battery.

If you can afford one, invest in a power cap. I didnt have one on my first car (punto mk.2, I feel sick just saying it ;O) )and when the amp drew up the power for big bass the headlights and dash brightness would dip in time to the music. With the cap you'll eliminate the problem, also gets a cleaner power supply to your amp
