Hi

I own a wireless adsl modem/router.

Does anyonw know how it knows how to connect to various ISP's just from a username/password... been baffling me for a while so thought there must be someone on here who might know!!

cheers:p

It's all determined at the DSLAM at your local exchange. Anyone with ADSL enabled on their line can connect to bt_test@startup_domain, but say your with pipex - you'd only ever be able to connect to pipex with a pipex username and passowrd, if you used say demon details it would just username / pass error.

thanks very much that sorta clears it up! whats DSLAM?? how does the filtering on the exchange work then? does BT allow ISP's access to certain phone numbers to apply this?

The DSLAM is basically an authentication device, it's software based and will only forward traffic along the ATM back bone of the BT network to the correct ISP's home gateway.

For ADSL to work, two cables are soldered from the line card to the DSLAM then the DSLAM decides where to send the data going by the later part of the login username.

There's some really good information on www.adslguide.org - very accurate and very up to date - also puts it accross with pictures ;) better than I can do on here with text.

( look the for how it works link on the top left ;) )
