When I spray the windscreen the wipers do their thing and clears it with the 3 standard back and forths, but then they do a delayed fourth wipe which always produces a really annoying rubbing noise as the blades don't glide smoothly over the surface of thw windscreen.

This noise also occurs if I have it on intermittent wiping and it's not raining that hard. If the windscreen is substantially wet enough, theyre fine, so...

Do I need new blades or is this normal?! (Happy to buy some, and I have the Bosch ones on my ebay watch list ready to buy, just thought I should check here first!)

How old is your car and are they the original blades? I'm inclined to say yes, change them, if they're more than say 2 yrs old.

It's a 2008 model, not sure if they're original though.

I'll give them a clean (although I'm sure I did this not that long ago- could have been my other half's car) and see what happens

I get this problem and usually change the wipers to fix it. Personally I think the wiper mounts are poorly designed and at the wrong angle on the windscreen which is why this problem occurs. I would say that I change the wiper blades once per year and get them online, much cheaper than dealer supplied originals. I am currently using Lucas ones but they are not as good as the Bosch or manufacturer supplied ones I have used previously.

The Bosch ones I've foubd come to £40 inc pnp for all 3 blades (rear one 'sqeaks' as well sometimes so figures i may as well change that while im at it!)

I have heard some good things about the Alca super flat blades. Much cheaper and come with the correct mounting bits. try e-bay.
I have recently replaced the rubber part of my blades with Alca blades..and they work better than the brand new Valeo wiper i bought.
