Winsock Error

Morning all,

IE 8 (on XP) is going alittle crazy on me. On websites I frequently get an error "This page can not be displayed", sometimes a refresh helps, otherwise it throws up the diagnostic, I run that, it then tells me i have a "Winsock Provider Error" PC needs to be rebooted to fix. I do all this, then a while later i am back to square one.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Did anyone else read this and have nightmare visions of the old trumpet winsock days?

I just spotted this as I had to do the old netsh winsock reset thing on my laptop yesterday..

but I do remember Trumpet

All that to get on the Internet on windows 3.1 and Spry Mosaic - Happy Days.

Didnt realise MS now have a 'click to fix' option.

Install decent Antivirus and spyware program and do a full sweep. Other cause would be the hard disk drive on the verge of failing.

I have AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, and CCleaner. So i think I have that covered (all updated and run on a weekly basis).
My drive is relatively new, under a year.
