After an impact, my wing mirror did not fold back, but broke apart. After breaking down the various parts leading to the hinge mechanism the reason was fairly clear.
This is a new van. Six months old. There is no lubrication in the fold mechanism, and corrosion is present at the upper and lower hinges, however the upper hinge does bear on a neoprene ring washer. After all the plastic components are removed, the body is cast aluminium. The lower bearing hinges on a steel cylinder, with a steel spring held down by steel circlip. The galvanic corrosion is substantial. Five photos attached.
How to lubricate this is a puzzle. The base of the lower hinge can be accessed by removing a blanking plate below, but getting oil or WD40 into the mechanism would be difficult. I am thinking about drilling a lubrication hole above each hinge centreline. Meanwhile I despair at the poor design. Whatever happened to grease guns and grease nipples.
