I'm not a massive fan of sat nav but getting one for Christmas...A garmin Nuvi 265WT...it was tested on the way back from the point of purchase...and seems pretty good recalculates your route quickly when you blatantly ignore it because its taking you the long way, has a good map showing the car driving along the road in real time.

Whats the traffic avoidance like on sat navs? Didn't get a chance to play with it has an fm loop for the window is it worth the effort of fitting it?

Not sure. I've always wondered this, and if they're effective aswell as how they work.

This is the only feature that might have me concidering purchasing and updating my current SatNav.

I'm not gonna lie...its just sheer lazyness on my behalf...I CBA to do any research before I set off these days. I just drive in a general direction and follow road signs... tbf its a method that has served me well as long as I don't need to find a specific house or street or encounter an unexpected speed camera.

i always get a bit cynical when i hear the mention of sat/navs....a clever piece of kit if you do a lot of driving in uncharted territory & really need one because you cant read a map but in the real world its a toy to most who after the initial novelty period, it doesnt get used all that much i do see them used in vans & lorries how ever quite a lot but that's a different story.
they're not cheap for a half decent one but at the end of day its entirely up to the individual

Well followed it for 300 miles yesterday it worked pretty well. Verdict is still open on traffic avoidance it did tell there was traffic on my route and offered an alternative which it then said was slower than sitting in the traffic and I shouldn't bother also it said there was moderate traffic later on, I got there and there was none so er obviously very dependent on the quality of info it recieves! Noticed a few pecularities tho E.g. on a section of the M6/M74 it thought there were 50mph average speed cameras when it was a 70 limit and the sat nav even said it was a 70 limit as did the signage so I was driving along for about 5 minutes with it bonging at me because I was "speeding", that didn't make me want to throw it out of the window at all. Also It must have really wanted to die at this point as it directed me south down the M6 for 6 miles before getting to a fly over and going back the way I came..obviously these 6 miles were the ones containing the phantom speed cameras so had a whole 10 minutes of BONG! BONG! BONG! while it directed me the wrong way (I thought I would humour it so did actually follow stupidly).Think it got confused because they've altered the lay out on the A68 so it had to keep recalcing cos it thought I was going off the route but its not finished yet so doubt maps would show it. On the way home in the dark tho it was brilliant other with holding the info on a left turn until 150 yds in front of it cue a quick mirror check followed by a lunge over 3 lanes...cheers for that Selena. Was good on A68 in the dark on the way back tho you can zoom the map in and actually have some idea of where the road on the other side of the blind brows goes and when bad corners are coming your way.

I can read a map perfectly well, thank you very much - don't tar as all with the same brush

It also gets used a lot, even on routes I know. A speed camera database that updates itself weekly helps [or can I buy a new map showing this every week?] - oh, no doubt you will come out with something about the fact I should pay attention to the speed signs, and not need a 'toy' to tell me this! But then again, I drive a 100HP - 'nuff said...

First thing I did when I got it was hook it up to net to update the maps e.t.c. The speed limit on the stretch is up to date but the camera DB isn't. Thinking about subscribing to one of the speed camera databases to get them right all the others were ok tho.

Which is the official garmin one Stu.. i couldn't find it on garmin site. I get a lot of beeping for possible portable cameras where i know the aren't any. I got cyclops loaded i think. good feture though
