will a mk2 gearbox fit a mk1

as title will the mark 2 1.6 gear box fit a mark 1 1.6 engine?

Should do, the engine block was the same BUT check the ratios, they changed them several times.

mine is a mk1 1997 the new box will be off an x reg mk2
