had a mk1 and a mk2 here, mk2 wins out no question.
but then this is suppost to be a first car, in which case your suppost to get an old pile of crap, its a right of passage!!!

everyone else on here says the mk1 is better thats the first time someone has said the mk2 sporting is better. i would go for the mk1 because it looks much smarter, the mk2 looks all girly and cute.

the MK2 engine also runs a different ECU and inlet manifold. The MK2 1242 16v also has more torque than the MK1.

In a race the MK1 would win because of its low wieght.

The Mk2 engine is less powerful than the Mk1 engine because European safety standards required better protection as otherwise the homologation certification would not have been granted in Austria, France Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
You've lost me on how the power of engine can be related to safety standards protection since a 30mph crash is still a 30 mph crash no matter how powerful your engine is if you get my drift.

in recent years, fiat has watered down all is engines.no doubt to pass emission laws.the downside is less performance, boring!!!!!
