Why do Bravos have a 3-box exhaust system?

Can anybody enlighten me as to why Bravos have a 3-box system? I ask because I'm considering having a Longlife exhaust fitted, but am worried that changing the 3-box system for a straight-through system might not be good for the car - does the engine need the 3-box system?
