I have a 1.9 JTD which runs well, although in the past couple of weeks has begun to make a whoosing sound on accelerating. The harder i accelerate the louder the noise. The sound comes from the passenger side footwell. I have had a look but cannot see any split hoses. Any ideas?

How does an induction kit sound on the JTD? Improvement?

Massive improvement on a diesel. Can't really describe it, it's like nothing you've heard before.
If your coming to any shows this year you can have a listen.
Only problem is if you want a GSR you will have to look out for a second hand one as peter stopped production of them.
Also there's the problem with the EML light as the jtd has different MAF sensor to multijet which is a hybrid between the jtd and the multijet gp engine.

I should hav some pics of my induction set up soon so if you look in my thread either today or tommorow and compare it to yours.

He stopped production for a very good reason as they cause havoc with engine management (as you suggest).

If anyone just wants a noisy induction then it's best to leave the MAF where it should be as Muppet did I believe when he modified his JTD.

Personally, I'd leave as standard as far fewer downsides - but everyone to their own :)

i have a GSR from a JTD 115 on mine just modified to block off the MAF hole, a spacer to fit onto turbo, and shortened to fit the MAF inbetween the filter and the GSR.
and guess what NO ENGINE LIGHT :p

Sounds like the proper way to do it to me, if you're using the original calibrated MAF housing, so perhaps you should start production (much like Muppet did by the sound of it) ;)

So is it reverse for you every time you come across deep puddles :D

yer theres no bodging here (or not much :p ) would be a much beter kit if i produced it as would get the pipes all the right size to fit onto turbo inlet and MAF :D
but wouldnt do it as theres not much demand for a induction kit for the 120 multijet and not sure of the 150 setup :(

reverse your having a laugh, its turn tails and run as fast as i can :p

have a look in my MM thread its got a couple pics of setup in it now
links in my sig :p

Yep, that's a much better job (should have been like that from outset ) (y)

Notice you're a lot lower at the rear than the front now - does that bother you or has it settled ?

Given time all Stilos on standard springs drop a little but did think yours looked a bit quirky after fitting the Eibachs - otherwise looks great (y)

i would of done it like that 1st time but was more experimenting than anything else tbh lol.

its settled down abit now as those pics are about 5 min after it was done.
still a bigger arch gap on the front than rear but alot more noticable its lowered now.

but the difference in handling i have found is excellent, doesnt squat even half as much when going through gears now. and holds so much better round corners even more so now ive got new tyres :)

Hi,

Did you ever get the bottom of the whooshing sound issue? I'm experiencing what sounds like a similar issue with my Punto and would love to know how you got on.

Any input would be appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

There are countless posts on the Whoosing on JTD's. The most common is the 'Split Intercooler Pipe'.

Jack it up, get underneath the car and have a friend rev the engine so you can source where it is coming from.

Oakley28,

Cheers for that, it only happens when the car is in motion though, not stationary. I started a new thread on this, full details below:

Fellow punto owners,

I'm hoping someone can help. I own a 2001 MKII Punto which has developed a strange whistling / whooshing sound over the past year. My best attempt to describe the sound is a kind of low pitched whistle or strung out "Whooooooooooooooop" sound gradually rising in pitch and volume, then abruptly stopping after a few seconds.
The prospect of renditioning this sound in front of the mechanics at my local garage is something I'd rather avoid.

The sound lasts for less than 5 seconds on acceleration in low gears only, when the engine has been started from cold. It only occurs when the car is in motion, between say 10 and 30 mph. Revving the engine at standstill fails to replicate the noise. Neither does it occur at high speeds or when the engine is warm.

The noise sounds like it's coming from under the bonnet - somewhere. That's as much as I can tell from the driving seat.

It does not appear to affect performance in anyway, but it is annoying. In all other respects the car runs really well, with 38,000 miles on the clock.

I've searched all of the posts on the site with similar sounding problems and the following causes have all been put forward:

  • Fan belt
  • Timing belt
  • split in filter box air intake pipe
  • Dirty air filter
  • water pump bearing
  • alternator bearing
  • splits in the exhaust
  • small gaps between exhaust sections
What do people think? Are there any simple tests I could undertake to narrow this list down?

Any further input would be really appreciated.
Cheers,

Dave
