Recently had a whirring noise from my engine compartment like another turbo sound.I read all the posts that talked about Split hoses etc, none of these applied.
It was difficult to identify the area it was comming from, so to eliminate the pulley end I took off the Auxilary belt and ran the engine(ok to do,not to drive like this,no power steering).
No more noise with the aux belt off, problem area found.
I checked all the pulleys all were in good order, except my alternator pulley, it turned freely and was charging ok,But when I tried moving it from side to side there was movement in the alternator bearings, this was the cause of the noise.
I replaced the alternator (I will post later on how, horrendous job) all noises gone. Job done.
