well finally put mine on today, so now sporting the hub cap less route, i do like how fiat have locator pins on the hub so a piece of cake, also took on board the comments for using the jack points rather than the sills

as said a superb thread with great advice and look forward to giving some feedback in the forthcoming weeks :)

If you're in Scotland you might get the chance to give some feeback on the white stuff as early as later this week! As for the rest of us there is nothing concrete for the forseeable future :(

Dear Snow Puppies....:) Well they just came. The forecast for London is still in double digits, I guess I need to wait till 7 deg and below to slap these on ??

Just pop them on. It's going to be above 7 degrees sometimes and below at others. There is a very slight chance of some snow within the next week so I'd put them on personally

How do they smell?

If you have rubber fettish I will capture some smell for you and post it :) hmmm they smell of rubber :p

Will do at next wash... btw: thanks for all the help, I am sure these will be great.

Not a problem. I'm hoping for snow so you guys get to see how good they really are, because that's when they really excel :)

Not a fetish (at least not one I am admitting on here, FRA or not) but I have to say I liked the way they made the garage smell.

I know what you mean. I quite like the smell of higher octane petrol. It just smells that little bit sweeter than regular unleaded, especially the crappy supermarket stuff.

Jeez Maxi you are one step away from saying you prefer sniffing Zippo lighter fuel to Ronson....
I don't sniff it as such, it's just the smell you notice at the pump. 95 just smells like it's going to eat your nasal passages (which it probably will do) but 98 just smells that bit nicer and slightly less toxic!

Is 8 the max? if so then sounds like the winter tyres will be the right choice even today.

My insurance pal didn't like the idea of me putting on winter tyres unless it was winter i.e. 7 degrees or less.
Realise that some of the premium tyres recommended on here e.g. the Ultragrips, TS800, Snowtrac3, etc perform just as well in the wet (better in some cases) than summer tyres but IF someone bought 'cheap' winter tyres their performance can be dismal in the wet. Given the no. of claims that my 'pal' is now refusing you can get a little paranoid. Some of the reviews that I read recently mentioned a 'cheap' winter tyre that was great in the snow / ice but was dismal in 'normal' conditions and got a 'not recommended' award. I wouldn't post the URL in case some is tempted !

Your friend would have no legal right to disallow a claim purely because someone had some not so good winter tyres on when the temp is over 7 degrees.

As long as a tyre is the right size, has enough tread, isn't damaged, is inflated correctly, meets the weight rating, is E marked and you don't exceed the rated speed then it is entirely legal whether it's classed as a summer or winter tyre.

I'd imagine your correct on that Maxi. But to give you some idea of what you dealing with - my pal is now head of the Claims department in very known insurance company based in the city. I got to deal with him on an shoulder injury claim on Health insurance that he was refusing to cover back in the 90s and he was a tough cookie. He covered me in the 'end' when he realised I was going out with a school pal of his girlfriend but I got off on a technicality of being admitted by ambulance to the hospital. He would give you a 'good run for your money' at the company legal expense team.:p

Methinks perhaps may look marginally more agreeable mounted on the 500 - in contrast to being parked over your mantelpiece, as a reminder to `her-indoors’ of your true love. Indeed, it’s been argued that some members love a Trabant more than `her-indoors.’

It’s dangerous to rely too heavily on the 7°C level – that the tyre industry trumpets as the magic pivotal figure. Some commentators have come to question the reliability of this figure - & distance themselves from using it.
Theoretically it offers some guidance – but the temp at which a winter tyre gains the advantage is widely unknown.

Then there is a real danger that slapping-on the `winters’ at low temp in the dry &/or wet, may have a negative rather than positive outcome. I suspect there maybe an increase in accidents due to folks being over-confident with the perception that suddenly their winters give them some edge over their regular tyres.
