I doubt that there are manufacturers that will use two different TWI's on their tyres, it would be expensive ( for them) and confusing (for the customers) , although there may be a small, local tyre brand that will use two TWI's.
The large brands will certainly not.

well you will have to trust me ;)

the SNOWTRAC 3's i have do have two TWI's the one at 4mm marks the limit of the sipe channels...

So the End of March beckons, time to think about removing the all seasons tyres, and ....................... its snowing.

Think I'll leave it for another couple of weeks till I put the 17s on.

Cheers

SPD

was going to do mine last weekend then i saw the long range weather forecast and left them on that and the road to work is a right mess as they are dredging the dikes

You can actually see the two TWI's in my photo below. The first one is where as you say the sipes are gone and also when the groove that runs 1/4 or so in from the edge of the tyre is gone and the second is at 1.6mm when the little slit in the first TWI is gone. If the sipes are gone I think I'd still run the tyre as long as it's not snowy and in fact I'd probably run them through the summer till they get to 2 or 3mm.

I suspect you'll find that the sipes themselves are TWI's in a sense as they don't actually go down to 0mm.

Driving wintertires in summer is not a good idea.
( emergency) stopping distance will be MUCH longer with soft rubbercompound winter tires.
Tell the parents of the child you may hit about your tire choice.....!!!

silly question time but are they "that" bad on warm road surfaces? granted they will wear faster

Surely they can't be any worse than some of the cheap and nasty £25 budget tyres 90% or so of the uk population seem to run round on?

Rather, just as summer tyres are better in snow and cold conditions than before, so winter tyres are better in warm conditions than ever.

:p

No it was a serious (silly) question as i do a fair bit of camping, and since the Snowtracs are M+S rated they might come in handy when the hill side camp-site turns into the Somme during the peak of the "British summer" It was that bad 2 years ago they were towing 2wd cars off with a tractor...

Yes they are, tests show that stopping distances in summer on wintertires can exceed 20-30 meters, compared to good summertires, and that's a loooooooong distance at an emergency stop!!!
