Hi scott73,

The engine in your picture has the model number 8140.43 on the camshaft cover label. That number means that it is a 2.8 idTD, which was made until 2001.

Oh that's good news, thought it was a non turbo version, how would you rate the engine? I'm used to my 2ltr Petrol engine with carbs on my old Fiat camper. Here is what the 2.8idTD is pulling ;)

The presence of the turbo may be deduced by the fact that the outlet of the air filter is going behind the engine and re-appearing as a pressure hose which runs behind the radiator. The engine has an intercooler, and has max power of 120 hp at 3600 rpm, with max torque of 210 lb ft @ 1800 rpm. This relatively low rpm for max torque makes it a good puller. It is not a racing car.

A problem on motorhomes equipped with same /similar engines and gearboxes was failure of the fifth gear, which relies on splash lubrication. OK for vans in frequent use, but after long layups gears could be dry.... I have seen and follow a recommendation to avoid engaging fifth gear for the first mile or two, particularly if vehicle has been standing idle for a long time.

Whoa room with a view , or what , huh .

Got the same engine , same year , in a left hook Hymer . Really good engine , nothing to go wrong . Actually despite only 122bhp , pulling 3.7 ton (i've replated) , i surprised at just how grunty it is , returning 32 mpg into the bargain .
Mechanical parts still relatively easy to source , but trim is virtually non existent , not really an issue with a custom vehicle . Can't fault it .
