Where should the left hand end of the smaller air pipe be attached? It's loose, and I can't see where it should go!

That pipe is meant to be like that. It for taking in warm air for cold starts to get the fuel mixture correct.

On my car I got the same thing, asked at specialisy they said its not meant to go anywhere.

Read Haynes and it described the warm air starts and some Thermostatic Valve Diphram.

Don't worry about it :)
 
its actually supposed to connect onto the exhaust manifold. its to get hot air into the inlet to help with cold starts. basicly the manifold heats up quicker than any point on the engine and so putting warm air into the inlet helps the engine idle untill its warmed up a bit more. however its completly pointless and makes the car slower and idle more roughly once it has warmed.

my advice, take the bloody pipe off and block the hole.

the less hot air getting into the inlet, the better! the car will be able to breathe better and will rev more smoothly. its a completly pointless pipe and the car benefits more with it removed. you probably wont notice a power increase but you should notice smoother engine responce etc.

also, direct the other pipe directly behind the front grill and cut a hole in the plastic panel behind the front grill to allow some cold air through from the grill rather than directing it all down the the rad. put the pipe behind this hole and ital help give the car more power at higher speeds, motorways to be more specific.

Isn't there a valve behind it though, which opens a flap directing air from either cold air inlet or manifold inlet, depending on engine temp? Even my G-reg Citroen AX had one of those! Best of both worlds...
Warming the engine up quickly is good as prolonged periods on a cold engine will use more fuel and promote premature engine wear.

there may be. im not sure, but its still pointless and heats up the air whether te valve is closed or not. remove it and get a cinquecento k&n. fits straight on and sounds lovely. not much of a power increase but the sound makes up for it!

ive added a cold air feed from behind the grill (as described above) and its made a nice difference on the motorway.
 
It is suppose to connect to a shield that is bolted between the inlet manifold and the exhaust manifold. The shield usually is rusted off or doesn’t survive any work around the back of the engine. With the shield the exhaust will now heat the inlet manifold doing a similar job to what the pipe is suppose to do.
