hi,

see pic of air box below, where do i drill holes to improve airflow? i will also get some tubing aimed to the holes to help too. and will a K&N high flow filter help? (i hope so, cos iv just bought one) and with that all done what kind of noise would i get when driving normally?? thanks for all help.

and, iv looked and the existing air flow pipe, is at such a rubbish place i doubt no air is coming through it, so i need to know can i use another type of hose to make a new air flow pipe going from the front grill to where the existing pipe goes, but i need to know does this pipe get hot? because i was wondering if i can use some old hose i have from a vaccum cleaner to make the new one (current one too short) thanks for any replys. i took a pic of the hose i want to replace below.

Hi again,

The pipe underneath the air box - going to the exhaust manifold is the one which gets hot, so you should be OK with using Vacuum hose.

TBH I’ve never had any problems with the standard set-up. If no air was coming through the pipe, the engine would not run.

It's also worth bearing in mind that when you drill holes into the airbox that the pressurising effect is lost. The airbox SUCKS in air through the cold and hot hoses leading to the airbox. If you makes holes in the airbox itself, it will be more likely to draw in air from the the engine bay than from the cold air feed.

This also applies when fitting a complete aftermarket airfilter such as a K&N. Even if you run a cold air feed to the filter, because it isn't pressurised it will still be drawing in air from the engine bay rather than sucking in air through the cold air tube.

The only way round this is to make sure the cold air feed is fitted directly in front of the grill so as to cause a ram air effect. At moderate to high speeds you should then get outside air flowing to the airfilter, but at slow speeds there will be little if not none.

Just a little food for thought ;)

If you have made up your mind and want holes... then: Remove the 1st part of the filter box, the one you want holes in. Use a jigsaw or similiar to cut away everything but the filter clamps.

That´s the biggest hole you´re ever gonna get!

If you have a SPi you have no need for the hot air feed from the manifold. The SPi does not suffer from icing or whatsoever. Attach yor new filter clamp and old filter. Route a new cold air feed if you want. The original one is blocked anyway.

I had a JR panel filter. No noticeable noice increment. It was just a little faster :)
But it's better to change the whole filter box as i did. Take a look at "Green Filter Oppinions" to see the Green filter i used.
