General When does the registration number become active?

My hubby went and signed the finance documents for our trekking yesterday and we were pleased to see it has already been assigned a reg plate. I've been trying to get some insurance quotes, but they all say they can't find the reg number. It's not exactly a. huge problem as I can simply enter the car details manually, but it would be a bit less tedious if I could just enter the number.

Is this the DVLA being slow or is there some other process at work? Guess I still can't believe it's all real and putting a valid reg number in somewhere shows that our car exists lol.

The numbers are allocated to dealers by DVLA in small batches, according to how many and how quickly they'll use. Alternatively, they apply online individually.

Whilst the number has been allocated to your car, it will not become "live" until the day it is actually registered and taxed. After that, there may be a delay before insurance companies databases are updated.
