Technical wheels?

Technical wheels?

If anyone cares, I'm putting up some pics of my new panda in a thread called 'Red' later this week.

I don't want to spoil any of the glory by putting any pics up before she gets lowered, on the new wheels and the Lancia Y10 ARB fitted.

Seen it on Ebay anyway. :p

Here they are :)

They are original Fiat X1/9 speedline alloys if anyone wants to know. Type in Fiat X1/9 into wikipedia or google and you can spot a few with them on.

Dimensions are 5Jx13

If anybody has some tyres for sale like 165/55/13, 175/50/13 or a similar combination then please let me know.

Cheers :)

I take it you got them from ebay? I was watching a set the same, probably the ones you have, from the picture it looked like one was buckled so I didn't bid, but I take it they are all ok?

no I found these in the classifieds section on here. Some of them have a few grazes from curbs but on the whole they should look pretty slick!

another lovely looking set of rims there(y) 165/55 not a bit small though?

Yeah they are kinda narrow in the grand scheme of things, but the '88 panda is running 165/55 on those white wheels and it handles pretty good.

If I can get 185/55 or a the same width with a lower aspect I'll be stoked!

Only problem is they are kind of hard to come by either cheap or second-hand. I've spied a set of 175/55 Yokohoma tyres but they wont go for cheap.

-edit-

Oh and also the rims I have are about ~15mm more offset than standard panda rims, so I have to be careful what size tyre I get in order to clear the archs lol

You really don't need bigger than 165 as a road tyre in my opinion. 185s are always gonna be a compromise in terms of restricting where you go/ rubbing bodywork, even if it isn't a big deal. Handling is better and more comfortable if you retain a similar offset to standard in my experience. You can't do this if you want to fit wider than 165 and again this is a compromise as you have already found out Alex with the handling characteristics of your white wheels due to too little offset.

You can compromise just for the look of the car, but if you use it everyday it can be a bit grating. Many are willing to put up with it, I think perhaps you are one of those people!

I was thinking more of the radius than the width, 165/65 on mine is probably closer to standard, 165/55 is what you get on the cinq rims and leaves your gearing a bit low. 175/55 probably more like it size wise. (if you look, 165/65 is a tad more common so the tyres are cheaper too)
Wondered about the offset too, X1/9 is rear drive so offsets are usually way different. Be interested if they fit OK cos they're a lovely wheel if they do!

Hi Alex, the wheels are looking good. (y) Are you keeping them all black or cutting it back in places?

I think if you go over 165's with the tyre width you may well have clearance problems. Also, as the wheels are still only 13" I wouldn't recommend a profile lower than 65, the gearing will be too low, especially if you're keeping these wheels when you upgrade the engine. If you want the benefits of a lower profile, you'd do well to go up to 14".

EDIT.

Ha! Think we must have all been typing at the same time.

Probably not what you're looking for, but I run 175/60s on my Panda (on Uno Turbo wheels) They were very reasonable, sourced from e-Tyres

lol about 15 comments appeared whilst I was reading the first one after mine!

where do I start emmm...

I fitted two of the X1/9 wheels to the front of my Panda and took it for a quick spin before they got re-furbed. They didn't seem to catch on full lock or anything, but only future driving will tell if they catch inside the arches at full suspension compression....and then theres the back wheels which I didn't even test LOL :D

It's all fun fun fun though!

As Lewey said and myself know, any bigger tyre widths and offset differences tend themselves to some bizzare handling traits; like road contour following and the inability of the steering to self-centre which is a little confusing at first.

I think though I should be fine at a max of 175/55 - and to be honest I'll only go for that if I come across some cheap.

It's a shame really that I got them all sprayed in Satin Black, I would have liked to have cut the centre's back to bare Aluminium but the works painter talked me out of it and tbh, they're gonna look sick whatever happens!

I might put some very thin, bright red rim tape round the outside though for a finishing touch when fitted.

Or mask the centres or outsides off and paint the rest white?

I'll do something interesting thats for sure :D

Got something identical for trackdays in the garage! Same gloss black finish and everything! Great wheel and obvious choice for track Pandas or funky Pandas. 175s on these really are as wide as you can go and retain almost full drivability. I do get some "light clattering" over curbs with these on with lowered suspension.

To echo most of what's been said above I'd steer clear of 185s... I've got 185/65s on r13 5 1/2j Uno Turbo alloys and although they stick like s##t to a blanket I can't put too much in the boot or the tyres hit the arches...

Cheers, Luke. (y)

loking where it sits compared to the other panda on the photos I'd say it was dropped a tad already.

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: You don't know our roads:bang::bang::bang:,they are for the suv's, not for a lowered car.And we are very poor with tunning parts.
hmmm, just a full tank of petrol and a bit of wear and tear off them roads lowering then(y)
