Well considering distance, speed and MPG then i would assume a high gear would be better travelling at a constant good speed.

47.2mpg combined cycle in my 1.2 16V Bravo was the highest I ever achieved.

In the Bora I'm still testing, but I did have a 56.9mpg run the other day, that was 75% motorway, 25% town in rush hour traffic!

Cruising at anything below 2,000rpm in a petrol is stupid, since as soon as you touch the accelerator that tiny bit, the MPG drops. It's better to knock it down a gear and then accelerate, that way you're not underrevving the engine.

Optimum driving range would be?

2000-3500?

as close to 2000rpm as you can get. At least, in my 1.8 that holds true. I imagin its slightly different dependent on your engine. i try to change up at 3500rpm unless i'm in a hurry or i'm in 4th or 5th.
