Technical What type of oil...

What about 1995 m reg mk1, ive heard a semi synthetic will stop the gearbox going stiff when its cold?

wot should i get for mine

engine oil and gearbox oil are different.

engine oil best is selina 20k unless its been modifed internally then something like selina racing...its what fiat recommend and is excellent.

gearbox oil use tutella gearbox oil which is 75/90 I think but please please please check before you buy.

if you go to fiat to get tutella gearbox oil they only stock 1 type you need 1.75ltrs for the fire gearboxes. (2x 1ltre bottles) (y)

This is going to sound a dumb ass question, but I know how to top up the mail OIL level, but if there is different oil for the gearbox where do you put that in ?

I've just carried out an Oil and Filter change on my Punto, is there any particular reason why the oil takes soooo long to go down the rocker cover filling point ? Is there anything that could be blocked, a breather vapour filter or suchlike. I pulled off the Breather hose to the Air filter and I'm sure it went down a little quicker. Most other cars I've had the oil just glugs down, with this one I have to be really carefull to avoid any spillage.

BTW, I went for Duckhams 10w40 'synthetic based' , the green stuff.
I also drained my old oil out and put in 2.5 litres of cheap Tesco's 10w40 plus a tin of Wynns Engine flush through first for 30 or 40 miles of very carefull driving, just to give it a nice internal clean out, before doing my final Engine Oil filter change with the Duckhams.

i wouldnt mind knowing that either! lol. the haynes has a small picture of a bolt where you fill it up but im unsure where it is? im guessing the ns of the gearbox accessed from under the car?

no open the bonnet and it is sort of inline with the battery tray.
It is horizontal and low down in the gearbox, like the centre of, rather than underneath.

I would use either 10w-40 semi-syn (cost option) or 5w-40 fully syn (quality option) also bear in mind that 5w-40 flows more easily at start-up and this is where 90% of the engine wear occurs.

nope, too thin.
mine makes a more mechanical roar with 5w30 on startup, i didn't use it for long :)

I would say 10w-40 or 5w-40 is more suited to your car.

0w is a little overkill in the UK, we rarely get temps of -35degC
