Both.
A polish restores the paint finish by taking off a small layer.
A wax then protects the paint by adding a layer on top.

Some polishes such as Autogylm SRP have a small amount of sealant properties but for the best results and most protection follow up with a wax or sealant product.

polishes AG SRP fills swirls in (although has some abrasives to remove light ones) others that are purely abrasive take microns of paint off to remove imperfections.

wax/sealants provide protection only and do not really enhance the look of the car btw: - waxes are natural made up of carnauba by % mostly usually but does not always hold the full truth sealants: - artificial based chemicals that allow greater protection and last longer and some consider to be well abit cold and clinical. you can use both for the best of both which i do over winter, summer only wax....

clay-->polish-->sealant-->wax

If you've got money to spend then you might want to look at Collinite 915 wax. Great shine and lasts months. Natural waxs tend to last less time than the synthetic types but I've found Collinite to continue offering protection and beading water for 3-6 months. Best to wax 4 or 5 times a year - more important in winter than summer.

personally recommend sealant FK1000p (finish kare 1000p), AG HD Wax (can be abit testing though at times tbh as it sometimes goes on abit thick and some others if you have some silly pounds to spend but i doubt they will really such as Dodo Supernatural V2, Swissvax BOS....
