Technical What is this fuel system 3 way device and does it go wrong?

device on bulkhead (top of picture) does not appear in 1988-91 haynes tipo manual. cannot figure out what it is or what it does. and importantly does it go wrong and how do you check if its doing what its meant to do?

there are 3 hoses involved: back connection: from pump, top: to carb, and front: to plastic fuel return pipe to tank.

is it fitted only to the/my formula model? or to all carb tipos but for a very limited period of time? there are two types of twin choke weber carb found on tipos apparently; is one for formula (more sporty?) and the other for the other 1.4 model(s)?

It is a device to stop fuel vapour building up in fuel pipe causing hot start problems(vapour lock)
It does not need checking working correctly unless you get no fuel to carb.....even then very very unlikely to be problem with this thing.
