Hi

Im considering buying a Panda, but don't want stop start. Just wondering what was the last year without it?

Thanks

Jon

As mentioned, you just have to remember to switch it off each time you start up. My Ibiza has it and I found it annoying at first as I would forget to punch the button after starting the engine. I soon got used to it though and now just do it as part of the start up procedure. Only thing I wonder about is how long the warning light bulb will last now I'm diving around all the time with it lit! Our older Panda 1.2 60hp doesn't have it. Mostly driven by Mrs Jock I sometimes find myself looking for the "cancel" button when I haven't driven it for a while! If you really have to have one without it I saw a Fiat brochure recently detailing that it's not available on the 69hp 1.2 engine - don't know if that's still the case?

When we were in the UK last year ..Our hire car a Renault , had stop start after the first ten mins I was sold ,it works very well never noticed.. it drove around for ten days..in town and out of town.... what are the drawbacks ? does it cain the battery ?...

You can deactivate it, so just get whichever one you want. The ones with S&S will be in a lower tax bracket.

Thanks. Can you disable it permanently? or do you have to turn it off every time you use it?

We would be using it infrequently mostly for local journeys so would be hard on the battery. I also prefer to choose when things go on and off and lock etc. I think I read that you can choose whether or not it self locks.

Eclipze mentions that his wife's stays off so maybe it's parameters are different to the Ibiza's - which resets to default "on" every time the ignition switch is cycled. Mind you, my boy's 2012 Punto Easy 1.4 8 valve almost never works so it might as well be switched off!

I've asked about permanently turning the Ibiza's off and the main dealer says that it's not an option. The Lads at AVW are of the opinion that it would be likely that the manufacturer's claimed emission and fuel consumption figures would be worst if disablement was an option so it's unlikely to be easily available but may be possible with the likes of my VCDS program. I've been thinking about it and come to the conclusion that I'll just live with it the way it is because it could cause problems if I want to sell it and find it difficult, or impossible, to reverse. Just have to remember to punch that button every time.

You may be asking yourself "Why does the silly old codger want to turn it off anyway?" For me it's not so much about battery and more around concerns around the longevity of the starter motor and wear to the flywheel ring gear. Also I don't like the idea of repeated hot stops (and consequent stopping of oil flow) to the turbo. Turbos get very hot and dissipate some of that heat through the oil which is constantly being "washed" through the turbo core. Stop the engine and the oil pump stops pumping so the oil stops circulating. The spindle and exhaust side casing are blisteringly hot. Oil is likely to carburise and lacquer the bearing bushings as well as "cooking off" the small quantity of oil left in the casing. - One very good reason to always use a fully synthetic in a turbo'd engine - Do this frequently (the stopping) and it has to have a detrimental effect on lubricant life. Weren't we all told that with turbo'd engines it was "kindest" to the turbo to let the engine idle for a couple of minutes, especially after "spirited" driving or prolonged motorway cruising to allow the turbine element to spin down with a full oil flow available and the casings to cool under the influence of the oil and cool air on the inlet side?

I could go on with other concerns but I'll limit myself to those at this time.
