i've been told that polishing and porting the head actually decreases the power/air flow?

Done properly, porting can make quite a difference. The idea is to match the shapes of head ports with the inlet manifold ports, remove any casting high spots and if the inlet and exhaust can flow more air, enlarging the ports slightly. This then allows a greater increase in air flow because the head can 'breathe' better, hence being more efficient and generating more power.

Polishing is different to porting. It used to be though that a smooth, mirror finish on the port surfaces would aid gas flow but it actually stops the air/ fuel mixture from mixing properly.

By keeping the surfaces slightly rough/ course, this promotes 'swirl', and allows the air/ fuel to mix better. Better mixed air/ fuel in the combustion chamber means a more efficient igniting of the fuel, which then means more power.

I'm fairly sure I am right on the above, but Smokeme or Oldschool might have to add a few corrections ;)

To sum up, porting = (y) and polishing = (n)

if you make ports larger :)

i heard that polishing is good on "inside??" of corners, outside should have horivontal scratches becouse fuel have grater inertia then air and it turns slower then air

fuel go outside on corners, and horinzontal scratches help to mix fuel with air

it is true???
