General what does the hot air intake do?

my hose is missing because of the induction kit. or so my friend says (i bought it off him) but what actualy does it do and can it actualy be just left with no tube on the end connected to anything or does it have to be plugged up.
any info would be amazing.

If the car in question has a carburettor fitted then the hot air pipe makes the difference between the carb icing or not in colder weather. The older carb equipped FIRE engines were notorious for this. On more modern cars the pipe is supposed to aid warm up time though icing isn't an issue with injection systems.

If the hot air is not getting to it, then, yes it will be cool.
