Today started ok , i intended on replacing the sump gasket/sealant on the multi.
Underestimated what a pain it would be, i need to stop a small leak around the crankshaft area which was spreading up the belts area but what a pain in the ass.
The 10mm that holds the dipstick into the sump is akward as anything.
The fact that the sump nut was totally stripped of what was once a way of removal.
The fact that the 2 remaining sump bolts hide in between the engine and gearbox and removing them without taking the box off or at least moving it is not an option.
Now ok i do need to do the clutch and poss flywheel so it looks like that will be happening earlier rather than later.
:bang:all this because i wanted to change the cambelt:bang:
ill try and get photos of the process but if it goes horribly wrong then i suspect the camera will get binned:D

if anyone has any info on how much play there should be in the flywheel then id be a happy man.

Well there will be no piccies so you can imagine how my day went:(

Managed to damage a driveshaft seal, and a gear selecter cable broke but im glad in a way as once it was out it became obvious it had gone in the past and a bodger had welded/braised it back together.
So the shopping list gets bigger but im not beat yet:).

Oh and the gearbox is now out:slayer:although it seems the last clutch was fitted the wrong way round:eek: so given this was grating against the flywheel bolts do you guys reckon this would have been enough to make lots of juddering ? When it was fitted it was done as a quick Sunday job and although the friction area was to big it seemed ok but from the off gear selection was poor but its gradually got worse.
Im just in the dilemma of do i order a flywheel  there seems to be about 10mm of forward/back play in it, and if anyone knows which way the threads are on the 6 flywheel bolts id be a happy man as im struggling to shift them at the moment which is making me think they may be left hand thread.

Update, rear lug on the sump is snapped off need to get that ali welded back on.
Found it amazing the amount of old sump sealer/gasket was in the sump itself and had blocked about half of the oil pickup gauze so a lucky escape me thinks.

Epic stuff mate, can almost feel the skinned knuckles and hear the swearing, keep updating......(y)

Ive got scrapes right up my arms :D and ive rubbed myself raw trying to get clean but this box oil is the nasty horrible smelly hypoid stuff.

Keep in there JTDman! Just keep telling yourself what a great feeling of satisfaction you will get when the jobs done properly. All the best.

when i change the clutch my fly wheel did the same moves you said,i have heard that is normal

Iam thinking its prob ok myself but its the just in case factor thats making me change it this time.

SO bored with waiting for the parts i decided id spray the sump and gearbox silver:D:eek::D at least ill see where the leak is coming from easier next time lol.
Oh also doing the battery tray as thats quite rusty.
Its a pity the cars body aint great as mechanicly it should be spot on as so far this year its had a new anti roll bar and links as well as wishbones new rear wheel bearing and now its getting the belts done clutch and dmf yey for cheap motoring:p.

Sumps back on :slayer:rear lug alloy welded back into place and looking very shiny! , its a pity the rest of the engine is still v dirty.
Flywheel seems to be a bit different to the old one im thinking it must be a newer design but it all fits well.
Pain in the bum tryin to get the sump back on with all the gunk on it as you have to support the engine from underneath which aint easy when the sump and box is off, small lug on the front left corner of the block sufficed but should have been a hoist job really.

Finished at last!

Well sort of , it appears when i changed the camshaft seal i must have damaged something so it looks like its leaking slightly:cry:

Although im still happy as ive allways had the help of others when taking on mechanical work but ive managed to remove and re fit the sump gearbox flywheel clutch cambelt rocker cover and various bits on the way:D.
Have to admit i had an extra pair of hands when removing and re positioning the box but its been worth it as its sooooooo much smoother with the flywheel done:slayer:
