where, who, how, do i get a webiste designed? is it pretty easy? or really hard?

my mum got one done for her shop but i think she was ripped off, as its not that great n cost here a wee bit.

i just wanna have a web page for my cinq, ive found a cracking domain name. but dunno how ya go about getting a site up n running. i just want it to have like a bar down the side with all the option, ( before, history, interoir, exterior etc) then when ya click on one of them it takes ya to it.

any advice plss! :) :)

if you dont need to use a database back end, and wont be accepting online payments or anything like that, then its very very easy. you can write the html yourself but for beginners its always easier to use a website builder. there are lots of free ones online. hosting is the main issue. where will you stick the website? private hosting will cost money, free hosting is easy to find but sticks loads of adverts on your website. i'd go for free hosting in this case.

ive seen a private hosting i like thats not too dear, but i dont want to but it, untill i know how to build it lol!!

now theres nothing fancy like databases etc, just simple pics etc.

You can buy a domain, but then you need webspace/hosting for it - hence why I suggested using the free space you already have.

I have used www.1and1.co.uk before - although now have an account with Centelia.

1and1 has the begineer package, at £2.34 per month - and has Websitebuilder - BUT you will need to buy the domain separate.

you buy a domain name, buy you still need hosting for the website. the domain is just what you type in the address bar, its not where the website will be stored.

EDIT: i'm too slow :)

ahhh i get it now, so the domain name isnt really a website, its just a name, need to have the website bit too?

exactly. The domain name is just a fancy name for an IP address - which is where the webserver can be found. much easier to remember fiatforum.com than 192.168.0.1 (not real IP :p) - which both point to the same place.

Some places do packages all in with webbuilders etc all built in. www.mdwebhosting.com.au do some silly cheap ones for what you get :) (includes fantastico which can be used to build good sites out the box). comes in at about £3.50 + £1.50 visa charge per month. Only downside is the latency of it all, but you get what you pay for really :)

if you can use microsoft word then its easy to make a website, use microsoft frontpage [comes with office 2003] as its very similar especially if you are starting with something simple.

thats what I used for my site, which is a very simple design. Normally I produce far better sites and currently I do about 13 sites for different people and organisations.

www.123-reg.co.uk is cheap for webspace and domain name, its part of the pipex group, easy to set up and use.

regarding your actual site though, when you build it save everything into one folder on your pc, make sure your home page is named 'index', and any images you use put them into subfolders.

finally, to put the files onto the webspace, you will need an FTP program, you can get these for free nowadays [just google 'free ftp'] but we use 'CuteFTP' and have done for 8 years now.

If you need more in depth advice, feel free to PM me and I see what I can do.
