I got some £150 walking boots three years ago and have never broken them in, my feet get too sore and they still don't bend and I remember an old flatmate of mine who was really into walking having bleeding feet from breaking her expensive pair in  Any tips Applesei apart from wearing them until your feet bleed? :(

Three years on I'm still wearing the (admittedly rather fabby) £25 pair I bought them to replace

Sounds like you bought the wrong boots.Modern boots shouldn't need much breaking in.If they don't feel right when new, then try a different pair.I doesn't matter what the marque is,it's the fit that counts.I likee Zamberlan boots,I find their "trecklite" boots feel like carpet slippers out of the box. They last well too.I have had mine for eight years now.Mountain warehouse, own make boots are pretty good too ,& not expensive. You still get Vibram soles,& goretex/Sympatex etc.Good value IMO.

Speaking of walking boots again, the Capp boots I bought that I mentioned earlier in this thread are superb. They are very very waterproof, they just don't let water in. They are also very comfortable. I've only used them for short (5 mile) walks so far, but they're great.

We're not talking about walking round a city centre or something here though. I walk up the Mourne Mountains in Co. Down, Northern Ireland. The weather can be unpredictable and if I went up in a pair of trainers my feet would be cold, wet, sore and very vulnerable. The boots I have are steel toecapped, have a Thinsulate lining and are waterproof, my feet will never ever get cold and wet in them.

It's the same with coats. You could go up in a light jacket, but it's not suitable for the job. You have to have the right tools to be safe.
