Anybody else had this?

After you log in, nothing happens, just a black screen. Nothing works. I tried SysRestore but it went horribly wrong, corrupting the entire system. It will boot in to Safe Mode, but you can't do anything because of permissions. Tried taking ownership of the System Drive, didn't work, I've no idea how to fix it. I resorted to blasting it, don't have the time/patience to deal with this sh*t outside work.

I haven't tried removing the HDD from the PC and trying to set the permissions via my own PC and a caddy (didn't think of this at the time!) but why the hell has this happened?

3 different machines (homers), an Acer laptop, a Dell Desktop (Vista) and an HP laptop. They have ZERO in common apart from they are running an x64 OS.

My x86 W7 machine has been absolutely fine for the past year.

I'm thankful we haven't migrated to W7 yet, not until MS fix this. Just wondering if anyone else has suffered from this?

No problems at all with Windows 7 on my Acer laptop, sorry. :p

Hate to say it but windows 7 fixes a lot of vista bugs ;)

As for this happening to all your home systems, have you installed anything on all of them recently? Printer software, anti-virus etc?

Have you connected any of them to an external harddrive or shared something over a network?

Not my home systems, homers, tax-free jobs?

It's not software related.

I believe mapped drives can cause this issue (trying to re-connect but can't, timeout period is quite long) but these were all newbie home machines, there were no mapped drives.

Also re-created the explorer.exe Shell, which was suggested the fix by Prevx, didn't work. There were no viruses/malware on any of the machines.

Funnily enough MS claim this isn't an update issue as first thought, but it must be, it has to be.
