Technical W Reg 2 Litre petrol starting problem

I have a 2000 model petrol engine. It regularly (now thank goodness!) will not start if the engine management light does not come on when you put the key in and try to start it. Sometimes you have to wait a while for the light to come on - checked the ecu and main relay connections and feeds which were all ok when checked.

It's important to share ...

In the absence of suggestions I've been checking - The fault I believe is with the immobiliser not sending a signal to the ecu - the fuel pump does not prime when the engine management light does not come on - with a car of this age it's probably cheaper to get a known good ecu with immobiliser from another car. It's an annoying fault because once started the car is fine. Will be selling it soon and so will decide whether to fix or sell as it is.
