Hey Guys,

A friend of mine showed me his car audio system the other day and I was asstounded! Him being a bit of an audiofile, he had wired up a Bose Accoustimass 25 series 1 home cinema subwoofer (passive) to a standard 12v car amplifier (600w peak alpine thingy) and very successfully managed to get some AMAZING bass from this subwoofer. I think the subwoofer was 150w RMS and the Amp was giving it 140w bridged at 4 ohms.

I was wondering..
is there any definite benefits of setting up a I.C.E system like this? I can imagine it would, but applying a reasonably similar wiring set up, would it be possible to run something like this:

off a Small amp without the need of a capacitor of any kind?

I have googled it, and you get ICE newbs saying you need a 12v/240v Inverter and need to spend THOUSANDS on getting it to work. (it says passive on the box :s )

Cheers

Ah ok, thanks.

I just thought it would be an ok and very cheap way of pulling together a budget sound system.

What do you suggest as far as SQ subs go?

Anything DLS, JL W3 an Higher, Velodyne, the higher end hertz ones can be very good, lots of Aliante selling for around the £200 mark on fleabay, Morel, CTD Qes range are good also.

Depends on your budget though really.

Only looking to spend £100 MAX, Im still not 100% sure if Im keeping my car come the end of winter anyway, Need something a bit more fuel effiecient.

Been running a Focal system in my 500 for a while now, comprising of a Focal 27-KX subwoofer , Focal 165-K2p front end , all amplified with a FP-4.75 amp , and im with volxstu on this, there is no way any home hi-fi subwoofer will compete with a properly set up car audio system, period.(y)

Im not trying to get a competition winning window shaking sound system, Im just looking for a little bit of bass to go with my OEM door drivers. I know a bit about audio systems and I know if you want SQ, then Its all about tuning and volume (cm3 not Db).
And as my car is a very well used daily driver then it needs something small, light and discreet.
I think unless you hear the sound from the above mentioned bose, then you wont know what Im on about. I think he only spent about £80 on the whole system and £40 of that was decent quality wiring (4AWG throughout) and thats alot cheaper than most basic "bass box" deals on the internet and in stores. and IMHO it performs ALOT better than most Vibe, Edge, FLI and other Halfrauds grade subs. (because thats the sorta price range Im in atm).

I think you would soon hear what the problems are when you have lived with it for a while. A lot of friends cars sound good after a brief listen. I think its all in the mind. After a few hours the cracks become very apparent.

I think you need something like the JL 12 W3. Look for a V1 (version 1). I got one in a sealed box for £28 delivered a few years ago.

I can see what you mean man, I do like JL's stuff and from what Ive heard, it lasts a lifetime of deep wobbles with very little distortion.

Thanks for the help
Cheers
Tom
