Got in the car to go to work, started the engine and all was well. Then suddenly everything went off (no stall, just cut out) and there was a small cloud of smoke that came from the steering column? What could this be? Needs sorting by saturday as that's whne I next have work.

Any advice appreciated

I would think its something electrical thats taken a fuse out or a relay burnt out. Maybe the stalks on the steering column if smoke came clearly came from there, which in turn knocked out a fuse. The steering is mechanical and hydraulically assisted so nothing within that should make smoke inside the car.

All fuse locations are on page 220 of the Manual. In the engine bay near the passenger suspension tower. is a rectangular plastic cover, some fuses are under there, Near the steering wheel behind a cover is a fuse box (black) as seen here and a another set of fuses above (yellow/Green). There are also relays on the back of the fuse box. Behind the glove box is another set of relays.

Obviously be carefull and fix the cause we wouldnt want to see your car burnt to a crisp in an electrical fire (y)
