newbie here. My problem is that when travelling i'm travelling uphill (it doesn't have to be steep)and have to slow down and change down a gear the revs seem to die so i change down again but there is no pull the engine just stops. Not sure what the problem could be. This is quite an annoying problem as i live at the top of a winding hill. Tried a few suggestions from the forum but no joy yet.( replaced air filter and used injector cleaner) any ideas would be greatly appreciated. oh yeah its a 96 brava 1.4sx

don't know mate. i'd wait for a reply off of tom he is a man that can

Re: Re: Uphill struggle

Jeez, not a bloody clue. Almost sounds fuel flow related.

If the tank is full does it do the same?

Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

Is your fuel pump working? Does the car make a whining sound when you turn your key for the 1st click?

Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

the tank hardly ever gets below half

Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

not that i have noticed

Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

It needs to make a whining sound, what it does is it pressurizes the fuel tank. Its best to leave your door open, sit in the car and turn the key once. Then listen for the whining sound. No sound then its not pressurizing. Hence thats your prob.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

Joske, No. The pump does not presurise the tank, it pumps fuel to the engine bay where the pressure regulator is. the tank is actually at negative pressure when the car is running.

If the pump was not working then the car would simply not run.

Does it accelerate OK on the flat.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

accelerates fine most of the time on the flat. Did have a flat spot in the low revs but doesnt seem as bad now.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

Strange. Really does seem like fuel pickup problem to me.

Might be worth popping the fuel pump unit out of the tank.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

forgot to mention get really crappy mpg

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Uphill struggle

OK, sorta important that bit!

I'd go to fiat and let them have a look at it, would be worth the £40 or so.

Could be the dreaded 1.4 old worn out throttle body.
