Hi,
I was driving to work today and found i couldnt select a gear, i pulled over thinking that the cable had snapped so i checked, it hadnt i got my friend to press the clutch pedal in and could see that it was moving the lever near the gearbox. I started the car in gear and drove in second gear about half a mile home, i got home and the tried to select a gear again and it worked !, drove around the block and began to notice a smell similar to burnt toast ! at which point there was a clatter and i stopped the car,,, i checked the brake/clutch fluid resevoir and it was fine,,,,,

any ideas as to what the problem could be before i get ripped off by a garage would be appreciated

mine just over 75k and still on original clutch (tap tap on wood) should i be expectin failure or just slippage in the near future? most of my mile are now long hauls
Pete

Actually, I was going to ask about this too...What is the expected life of a clutch (1.8 HLX)? Mine is at 86k and has been driven reasonably hard by me for the last 20k...its a bit stiff but aslways has been and does bite quite high....is this an abnormally long time for a clutch?

not at all mine lasted fine until 93k but expect it within the next 10k or so. feels like a new car afterwards though.

not wishing to boast but........ 137k original clutch ( marea 1.9td)- sadly took it into the garage today as its shuddering in first as the clutch is engaged .... empty wallet time !!!

twas already jinxed - ive been trying to ignore it for the last three days !!!

it wasnt the clutch - it was the engine mountings !!
i can boast again.............

What might the cost of a new clutch be (for an HGT, - whilst someone brought up the subjuct, cos AA guy said might be worthwhile having done with cambelt, except he might have been basing that on assumption whole engine would be removed, AND mines only doen 46K so far), and there seems to be uprated clutches of some description otherwise available..??

I'm guessing you could 'uprate' something in all sorts of different ways without actually being able to deride any tangible benefit from said up-spec, so is there any gain in going uprated?? (i duno, desides the clutch plate, what else a clutch is even composed of, ie. what else might actually be replaced?)
