I have a slight problem with my car, I hope it is slight.

I was driving through town and there were road works, so i was at stand still for 30 mins. After that there was traffic lights every 200 yards. At the third set of lights I went to pull away and nothing happened. Looked at the dash and the engine had stalled. I thought I can't remember the car struggling and stalling but anyway I started the car again and off I went. I stopped at the next lights and the car just died again. This happened 3 times before I could pull over. Ifs fine. The car just died when the revs got to about 1000. For example the engine died when turning into a side road to park the car. I left the car for 2 mins to call work and tried the engine again, to my supprise it worked and has been ok for the rest of the day.

My dad thinks it could be something to do with the fuel relay switch.

I have the car booked in for a service anyway on Friday but I would just like ideas of parts and costs.

Car: 1999 MK2, Bravo 1.6, 50000 miles, cambelt is going to be changed next month.

Thanks in advance

Fouled plugs, to be expected if its been sat idling that long.

if the revs just drop straight down when u lift off the throttle, ie not stop at 800
then it sounds to me like the idle air control valve is clogged. if im right then this is not an easy job on a mk2 1.6

Thanks guys. I thought that it must be something do do with the idling and the fact that the plugs are old.
