Took my HGT to a local garage this morning to have a look at a rattle under the bonnet. They told me it sounded like the cam belt was on the way out. When it is about to go does it tend to sound a bit "cammy" or is there no warning. I'm sure it's been sounding like this for a while. The car has only done 34,000 miles. Is there anything I can check on either the belt or tensioner to see if its knackered.

Does the sound you have almost sound like your pushbike did when you put flappy things in the spokes :) when you were a kid? If so its on the induction side and a number of HGT's do this, including my old one.

If it really is the tensioner then STOP, do not drive it any further until its changed, however it is rare for the 5 cyclinder to let go. You cant really check it that easily as its an engine out jobbie.

Re: Re: Untitled

It does sound a bit like "something in the spokes" to be honest. Like I say I think it has been doing it for a while and at only 34,000 miles I thought it would be a bit early for anything nasty to happen. The noise doesn't get any worse with more revs but without hearing another engine or getting someone who knows what it should sound like to listen I'm not sure. I think I will take it to the Fiat dealers and let them have a listen. Its the girlfriends micra until then.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Re: Re: Untitled

Next time you are at the car with it running and the bonnet open, have alisten around number 5 inlet and wobble the black plastic about, it may change tune. If it does then dont worry about it, mine did it for 30,000 miles and it didnt get much worse.

Excuse the ignorance, but which side is inlet 5 on?
