Hi, i need some help, im 21 in september and currently drivin a 1.8 hlx p reg, as i will have 4 years no claims ( i Hope) and just changed my job to a trainee manager at waitrose, im thinking bout an upgrade of motor.

Im gonna try and stick with a fiat, goin for the 2l 20v turbo coupe, however, ive heard that the 4x4 vauxhall calibra turbo mite be more of a car???

Has neone had experiences of the two and what are the pos & negs for each one?? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Fiat

In my own humble opinion I would choose the Fiat over the Vauxhall any day. The Fiat got great reviews when it came out, and still looks great. The Vauxhall is, well a Vauxhall, and performance asside won't offer you the latin charm and looks. I'd check out what the insurance will be first mind!

Fiat

I worked with a guy in the mid 90's who had a Calibra 4x4 Turbo and the thing was always in the garage for something. They are a bit of a dinosaur in terms of design and chassis set up compared with the Fiat. Dont forget it was made on a Cavalier chassis, not even a Vectra one.

The only other things I remember about his particular car were the inadequate leather seats that had too little front cushion to stop you sliding off every time the brakes were applied and that is had 200BHP.

The Calibra also suffered horrendous problems with the gearbox if different tyres were used. They had to be changed all in one with the same make and type otherwise the box wound itself up (I know this happens on other 4x4's but this one was notorious for it)

I would definently go for the Fiat over the Vauxhall, its more up to date, better looking, not driven by Kev and more likely to have a had a better history than the Vauxhall. And bear in mind that were it not for emission failures the Fiat would probably still be in production today (as well as the 155 HGT engine!) and that says a lot more for it than I could here!

Re: Fiat

Cheers guys, ive read teh review for the coupe but im still looking for the calibra, the insurance is not that much different, only a couple of hundrerd in it!!!

Car

Out of the two cars I'd go for the Fiat, dont like the Calibras, think they look dated and tacky now, but the Fiat looks good.
I'm guessing your spending about £8k or so on one.
Only, if your spending that money, why not go for an RX7? I have just bought one myself in red, pick it up in a week. You can get them for about £8000 upwards for an L reg one, insurance a bit more money, but worth it I reckon. A 2.6 Twin turbo rotary motor, bout 300bhp.
