Technical Uno Turbo, fresh engine setup.

Whats more expensive? Fitting a grands worth of decent engine and parts into a solid chassis thats good for another 10 years, or buying some sh!tty nail with a dump valve and a fart can that uses more oil than petrol?

The reason I'm doing this conversion is because I know the engine is in good condition, plus it has electronic boost control which I wanted anyway and it can put out impressive power.

Not sure about the pointless part either. Maybe if I was going to tour the UK with a caravan hitched to the back it would be pointless. Seeing as I intend to RWYB and go to a few trackdays then I see it as very pointfull.

Anyway, what do you guys reckon a stock uno gearbox can take?

Sure youve considered it bit I can see it being usefull on a drag strip if you can get the power down but not sure what it will handle bends like.

There was an Uno Turbo powered cinquecento which handled pritty badly on bends because of the extra weight, but the turbocharged stock fire engines were said to cope much better..

not sure how the panda and it's replacement compare :)

haha exploding gearbox's!! Fantastic!

Well my 16v Punto engine ate through 1st gear on the Panda gearbox after a few weeks. If my uno gearbox dies, I'll have to get another and get the internals shot peened or find an upgrade somewhere.

I share similar concern about handling of the Panda, although the weight difference will be small after the interior is stripped. Getting power down with an open diff may be a struggle, but I cant wait to see how it accelerates in second to fourth gear. Should be insane!

I would liked to have turbocharged my current 16v engine, however it would have needed new tappets/cams and probably the bottom end as it was all starting to make a racket. Then theres additional injectors and injector control....would have cost the same if not more than this uno conversion and probably been down on power too.

I've been in a circa 240bhp UT in Cape Town, even with snap-changes the gearbox was fine and has been for many miles.

The issue we all face with Fiats is lack of "quality" control on their part, they don't care as long as its good in STANDARD form.

To clarify, the mk2 blocks are OPEN DECK and the mk1's are CLOSED deck.

Cheers for the heads up on the gearbox :) I had heard from another guy that they could handle the power, plus the previous owner of this engine was running a stock box, albeit Quaife LSD, and it stood up to the abuse.

I dont really plan on running rediculous boost, probably maximum of 20psi at any one time. Surely the open deck Mk2 engine can hold that? Interesting though, I didn't even know the uno turbo engines had different deck styles. If the Mk2 is an open deck then the Mk1 must have hardly any water cooling at all! Just looked at some piccys of a Mk2 block, and only 1/4 of the cylinder wall is exposed to a water jacket.

Ah well it doesn't really matter for me I dont think.

Is he saying that these brakes are a direct, bolt on upgrade for the Panda? Not really fussed about wheel size as I think some 14" wheels are in order anyway, but if the Doblo van brakes fit straight on - im well chuffed!
It appears that is what he is saying. Nice cheap upgrade that I didn't know about until now. Will consider for my Panda.

Back to UTs, a good condition standard gearbox will be fine for around 200 lb/ft torque if used sensibly, but I don't suppose you will want to drive it like that! I took the gearbox apart that was attached to the engine in question so I could extract the LSD earlier in the year. I couldn't see any wear on anything I examined. It was reconditioned a while ago, but has been used on track with 20PSI boost. The low weight of your project will help things a little. It's possible to run the power you want, but putting a too large turbo on will wreck everything with the probably unnecessary torque it will produce. I would go with a standard-ish size turbo at first and see how mad it is already. Use the electronics to make a nice flat torque curve with relatively low lag. I think that will optimal for general fun.

The gearbox and driveshafts will be fine, its all been done before on standard shafts and gearbox and it seems to go to plan.

hmm this doblo brake upgrade has got me thinking now! I know someone with a doblo too, might have to have a look!

'Yeah its got 250bhp, an NCAP rating of zero stars and I've upgraded it to van brakes.'

haha love it :)

I would like to achieve 250bhp from this engine.

Are you really sure you want that much hp in this little car. I imagine it will torque steer like crazy, screw the axles, and wear tyres and clutches something awful.

My 93 Saab 9000 griffin has 250 hp and will chirp the tyres in 2nd gear, it is an auto and yes it has the T25, which is tuned to come on at between 2250 - 4500rpm on full throttle.

BTW-the avatar is of my project car - an Uno 60-1100, that is getting a 1600 engine this winter. (I hope!~)
