Hi,

Ive got the same no spark problem with my Uno Mia 2000....I recently replaced the ignition coil, ecu, starter motor, distributor cap, spark plugs and HT leads, hoping this would solve my "no starting prob" , i managed to get the car started, but the battery warning flashes, when i switched on the lights, the car idle dropped drastically to the point it died. That was the last time the car started (bout 3 weeks ago) I noticed that my bosch alternator was covered in oil and a massive puddle under the engine. I also checked the voltage of the battery (12.6 with ignition on) and the voltage at the coil LT terminals (11.7 with ignition on). Could it be a faulty connection to the coil? The oil leak mayb the rear oil seal? Oh and last year december, I had the engine overhauled. Btw its a "Breakerless Ignition System"

I just want to get the uno driving again.....any suggestions would help...

thanking you
Jason (South Africa)

Re: 1988 uno ignition problem

Sounds to me like something funky is up with the alternator.
Thats obviously not related to the non-starting problem!

I agree with uCof, the alternator is probably drenched in oil and needs taking out and cleaning. Perhaps it has a faulty voltage regulator - you can get it tested at an auto electrician's while you have it removed. Ideally you should see 12.3V at the battery with the engine not running, then at least 13.2V at the battery with the engine running (may be up to 14.4V). Your figures are a long way off that.

Secondly, once the alternator circuit is working right, the coil should have a supply of at least 12V from the ignition switch (so, if volts are being lost, the ignition switch is suspect or the distributor has a bad earth (and in turn, the engine block has a bad earth).

Check/clean the battery terminals and also the earth cable to the transmission (under the battery).

As for how the oil got onto the alternator... I assume this is the FIRE engine (hence why I moved it out of the thread about the 1116cc/1301cc engine) so there aren't many things that leak on the front of the engine - cam pulley seal? Or just spilled oil when filling (a very slow process). Either way it's not the rear main seal as that's at the other end of the engine. The oil would have to be leaking quite high-up on the engine block/cylinder head in order to get on the alternator.

Hi Guys, thanks for the help, I decided to replace all the seals/gaskets, just waiting on dealer to get back to me, as for the coil, i replaced the new coil with my old coil, the sprk seems to disappear, between the coil and distributor, ive sent the distributor to a auto elec. Gonna replace the alternator today... btw what other make alternators will fit my 1100cc uno besides a bosch?

Magneto Marelli.

To be honest, it doesn't really matter on the make, just get one that will fit and it should all be good.

There is a module located on the dizzy and it is moer expensive. Try and source a test unit.

From what you explained, it sounds like the alternator though. Jump start with another car on the leads... she how she runs then.

Is your alternator belt still there?
