General Uno broken into..

Last night when I was in the hospital getting my eye sorted my white Uno was broken into...

They`ve bent the rust free door upen & smashed the ignition barrel off... Anyone got a barrel surround spare?

I just got back from where she was, they also broke the drivers door barrel, the actual ignition switch unit (which is why they didnt manage to start it) & the brake light switch.

So I need a barrel housing, an ignition barel switch, a brake light switch & the column trim...

Joyriders will always target older cars like unos. Easy to steal! Modern cars are waaaayy too much effort!

Cheers Dunc, they do indeed, I`m lucky they were such amateurs, only my Boxster is covered for fire & theft, the rest are 3rd party on my trade policy.

I`m sure it would have got burnt out if they had succeeded...

Indeed they used it for some thefts and robberies and put it on fire afterwards. My dad invested a lot to keep the car going , overhauled engine and so on and what we got back from the insurance was a joke.

Yeah, I`ve had cars taken before, its very unpleasant & you rarely get its real replacement value, esecially when its something as rare as an Uno, but as I said, I have a trade insurance policy, only my Boxster has fire & theft cover, all my others are basic 3rd party only cover (even the XJR), so if I have them nicked, burnt, or vandalied (the XJR, Tempra & grey Uno have both had vandal & hit & run damage in the last 18 months), I cant claim a penny, so, I`m grateful they didnt manage to get it going!

That's just sick, so sad to hear it...

I seem to recall selling the steering lock but not sure if they both went.

try to replace the whole steering lock assy as it's only 6 bolts IIR

The MK1 unit has a shorter reach.

I seem to recall selling the steering lock but not sure if they both went.

try to replace the whole steering lock assy as it's only 6 bolts IIR

The MK1 unit has a shorter reach.

Cheers mate, yeah, it would be alot easier to change the whole upper column! I did call that breakers that had the Mk2 auto, he said I could have the lot for £25 which would be a bit of a bargain (he`s usually way overpriced)... but then I thought about it & I seemed to remember it was there because it had been nicked... I called back & sure enough, when he checked it, it had already had the lock snapped off... :bang:

Which parts different Louie? the barrel surround? You mean if I put a Mk1 one on mine the lock would be deep inside the column trim?

They didnt try to `jiggle` the ignition barrel, just smashed it off, so luckily the barrels fine, so can transfer it & keep the 1 key for the whole car. Having said that the drivers door lock is disconnected inside after the initial attack, I`ve got a feeling they`ve snapped the cam off of the barrel.

I can help ya

I took the whole steering column off the FuCTFiAT, compete with ignition barrel and steering lock assembly intact and I salvaged the doors/rear hatch lock set as well
as they are a totally matched set [iginition / doors / hatch] on the one key which I think I still have the two copies of

I can't help with the brake light switch though
cost I left mine on the pedal box :bang: that I sold to a guy in London who was converting from cable to hydro clutch
He bought both cylinders off me on eBay, THEN asked if I'd also sell him all brackets, pipes and pedal box
[was fun taking all that off! ]
This is why I bothered to take the steering column off as it was in my way

Also just last wheel sold my steering column shroud as well . . so SORRY can't help with that either

Anyway as for the steering column & locks . . No problem with postage
I used Parcel2go.com for the clutch parts
That was a MASSIVE and HeavY box but still only cost about £8 for recorded 3 to 5 day delivery by HDNL

So what you willing to offer . . .

I`ve just come off the phone with Ucof funny enough (I have to go round his to pick up a box for my other Uno too), he thinks he`s got all the stuff I need, but he just needs to make sure.

If he hasnt got all of it I`ll let you know tho mate.

The piece of metal in my eye was taken out in 3 pieces.. not nice

And yes, I was wearing eye protection!

BUT I managed to send him everything he would need, ACCEPT the actuator arm off my gearbox as it was seized in place [rusty splines!]
BUT I'm guessing he'll have that on the gearbox he is fitting? ? ?

It wasnt nice, I`ve got pretty strong stomach, but having someone pick metal out of your eye with a needle made even me feel a bit queezy...:yuck:

I`d love to know what he was doing with the clutch, was he a forum member? I wonder if he was changing from a C501 box to an easier to get hold of C513... in which case I`d want his old box!

It aint nice, I`ve had several cars nicked before (years ago), but I`ve had alot more cars broken into, sometimes for as little as 5 cigarettes or whole ICE systems, it makes you feel personally victimised even though its pretty much random. It does make you feel like you cant have/make anything nice without someone wanting to wreck it or take it.

Anyway, just so you all know, the resident moderating superhero aka Ucov sorted me out with the upper column & trims yesterday, so panic over! Thanks to Louie Bee & Jo0lzy for the kind offers, if it happens to anyone else on here (I hope it doesnt) & they stumble on this thread they`ll know who to PM for the bits
