Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

think i paid about 40 quid for new disks and pads, about £2 for a wiper blade, reconed my calipers with a little coppergrease, some ehaust putty to stop the blowing.

I make that about 60 quid parts tops :(

EDIT: and my MOT is about 38 quid, i dont live too far from maidstone

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

eh? I am sure last time I went for a MOT it was £25?

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

 Last time I went for My MOT in Rotherham (3 years ago) it was £15, and £5 for 2nd retest. Funny old world.

The Cap is around £42.50 – but (y) garages can charge as little as they wish ;)

 I reckon the garage has seen the Turbo badge on the Tail Gate, and quoted for Turbo parts. There was never a 1.2 Uno made…

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

I am going to ask my parents later what I pay, I simply don't remember!

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

duh....i gave them on when I sold the car....I assume my receipt was attached to the MOT checklist etc.

Oh well, will ask later. I am sure I didn't pay and never paid above £30 and £25 rings a bell. I have only done two MOTs in my life!

Anyway, hardly the issue if most others pay similar. I only pointed it out as it was a "if they are going to charge £x for a MOT they must be charging stupid money on everything!"

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT_______Rip Off Alert____-____Please Help!!!

I'd get in touch and just confirm they were looking at the right car. I'm sure my Uno Turbo only had one front wiper blade!

the goverment set price for an mot was about 42.50 last i checked, but some garages will do it cheeper, trade price for an mot is about a tenner less than retail :)

It might be Grim up North, but it's cheap and grim, so it'll do me!
I pay £17.50 for an MOT.

Another twist for Bianca

 As the train fare is so high, I’m now looking to drive her back to Manchester on the back of a truck or trailer, take my time on the work and post pictures as I go along. I think it will be far safer this way.

 The thing is I’m struggling to find a suitable vehicle at the moment. Any suggestions will be gratefully received!

Regards All,

Re: Uno Bianca Failed MOT____TITLE EDIT: How To Get From Kent To Manchester?

Only just been able to go through these threads, so sorry if these comments are a little late!

Regarding Bianca's fail sheet, firstly yes, the prices seem very high. BUT, I am assuming that the prices include both parts AND fitting. Seeing as most garages probably charge at least £40 an hour labour, it probably isn't too bad though it still seems excessive to me.

Thing is though, with an old car like the Uno it just isn't worth spending that kind of money to have a garage fix it. Most, if not all of the jobs could be done quite easily by a reasonable home mechanic. Time to get the Haynes out!

I noticed a rather interesting point on the fail sheet. They PASSED the condition of the service brakes, and only failed it on imbalance. This would mean one caliper was gripping harder than the other, nothing else.

Yet in the invoice they wanted to charge for two new flexi hoses and stated that 'both flexi hoses perished'. If the hoses had perished then that should have been a fail on the MOT sheet under 'Condition of service brake system'. Bit suspect that...

And £210 to supply and fit a new caliper! I had to laugh. You could probably buy at least 20 calipers from a scrappy for that, or even a couple of Uno's for the same price. Again to be fair, a caliper from FIAT probably costs well over £100. Silly prices, but that's why we rebuild parts or search scrapyards to get the same items for a fraction of the price.

By the way, look at the invoice under the 'Brakes' heading. It says at the bottom of this section "If front pads and DICS are required". Sounds like they are the ones that are 'Dics'...

At the end of the day, Bianca is in surprisingly good condition and hasn't really failed on anything major at all. A days work armed with a Haynes manual should sort it out and make it MOT passable.

I'd get that car out of their hands quickly and sort out the work at your leisure.

Chas
