I have a 1993 Fiat Uno 999c Fire with SPI.

I had asked my FIAT mechanic what is the best way to upgrade for power and torque.

His suggestion was to change the block from the 999c to a Punto 1246cc block and leave everything the same. So the car would retain the same head, gearbox etc.

Does this sound reasonable? I am not for all out power but would appreciate not having to keep changing to 3rd on a incline....

Hi, i have recently done that swap and the power and torque increase is good. But rather than changine the block only, get a punto 60 1242 engine and put the whole thing in. The 1.2 head has bigger valves so flows better than the 999cc one. Everything from the uno mounts on in the same place but you need to get an angle grinder and remove some metal from the block where the starter motor goes as the 1.2 block as a raised bit there. I used the punto flywheel and the punto 60 clutch but got an uno release bearing seperately.

Hope this helps, check my thread out https://www.fiatforum.com/uno/276778-999cc-1242cc-about-time.html

also the exhaust will need a bit of work, you can take a gasket from where the manifold meets the cat/downpipe to a machine shop and ask them to make a piece of steel like that but with a depth of 15mm/1.5cm and then with some longer bolts/studs fit that in between as the exhaust will touch the sump if it isn't spaced.

Or you can get a punto 75 exhaust manifold which is the right size and will space the exhaust enough to clear. I went for a punto 60 supersprint 4-2-1 stainless manifold and modified it to meet the uno system.

Another vote for "get whole engine"! Get inlet manifold with everything like loom and ECU. As you have an SPI system, the 1242 SPI engine is the obvious choice. Easy change and a transformed car no doubt.

Lewey You don't need the loom or ecu, it is literally plug and play, no mods. Plus the uno inlet manifold is much better than the punto ones and they often swap them over in favour of the unos.

Will getting the punto 60 loom and ecu work with the Uno's dash and actually intergrate with the other electronics?

I know first hand that the throttle position sensors are different on the Uno throttle body than punto and sento one's. The uno one has 4 pins and the punto/sento one's have three pins. I'm in search of a 999cc throttle body so that i can graft the tps on to my tricker throttle body then i will be able to ise it lol.

But if you think that the punto electronics will work with the uno then i may get a loom and ecu anduse a mckritch chip to bypass the immobiliser.

Hi, you say they are plug and play, but then mention the differences in sensors on the throttle body. How can this be so? I wouldn't run a 1242 engine with a 999cc ECU. It is going to be a bit pants. You may as well do it properly as it is all so cheap and easy to get hold of.

There is no integration between dash or other parts of the car and the engine loom/ECU. Mk1 Puntos are still retro-fit (pre-network) electronics, so nothing to worry about there. The only connections from the dash to the engine are a wire to the ignition coil for RPM and one (or two) to a temp sensor for the temp gauge. They are all interchangeable at this time as they use separate temp sensors from those used for the ECU. A 1242 "mckritch" ECU is probably a good idea to remove immobiliser complication and get a horsepower or whatever.

Oh right, well i will deffo look into getting a mk1 loom and ecu.

The engine is plug and play but only if you are using the uno throttle body. The uno and punto have different throttle position sensors. other than that only modification to the block is needed to fit everything the 999cc uno already has.

I'm running the 1242 engine on everything uno 999cc apart from the exhaust manifold and i'm still reaching for a 6th gear. it isn't as quick as a turbo by a long shot but compared to what it was it is much faster and i can easily pull away from most cars on the road.

I was keeping in front of an 11 plate passat tdi and we were really gunning for it. It was reaching speeds that i wasn't too comfortable with down little country lanes so when he tried to overtake again i braked to let him past.

I don't know what the other driver was like, but for me my Uno has benefited a lot from the engine change.

Will a 1242 16v head fit the 999 block?

I have a 1242 16v in my 45S. Fits nicely. There isn't a single wire in the car though, hopefully that will happen during the winter (MS).
