I've sometimes seen it recommended that you start at the caliper/wheel-cylinder furthest from the master cylinder and work you way closer but nobody has ever been able to explain why to me.

I don't think it matters what sequence you do them providing you get all the air out.

Yes working from the furthest to the nearest is normally the suggested way.
I was told many moons ago that if you do the nearest first you have more risk of old fluid being squeezed in and out on the long run and getting back into the shorter run pipes as you work back.
Starting at the back or the longest run ensures the maximum amount of pipework now holds new fluid and as you work nearer you clear the rest out.

Maybe worth checking if ABS needs anything special. I know some systems need the ABS to be forced open to allow the fluid it contains to be pumped through.
